Coughing is usually an irritation of the throat, which causes you to cough in order to “eject” the unwanted substance in your body. Doctors have explained that cough can be divided into 2 categories: Dry cough and wet cough. Dry cough usually sound chesty and it’s often occurring at night, where the conditions are cold. Wet cough, however, attempts to cough out phlegm that is irritating the throat. You can hear and feel the wetness of the cough and you have to spit out the phlegm most of the time.
Coughing is also a symptom to indicate a serious illness. If you have only a cough without fever, pain, etc. you can try out the natural remedies and it should help you clear the cough. However, if your cough comes with high fever, flu, short of breath, chill, etc. you should seek a doctor’s attention.
There are many ways to get rid of a cough. One common way is to take cough medicine. There are 2 type of medicine: Suppressant and Expectorant. Suppressant is used for dry cough while Expectorant is used for wet cough. Don’t use it the other way round! If you are unsure if you are having a dry or wet cough, Robitussin has a medicine that will treat both wet and dry cough. Depending on each individual, you can recover from your cough in just 2-3 days if you take this medicine.
Robitussin is a trusted brand so I think it’s well suited for everyone. Of course, if you are unsure, it’s always best to ask your family doctor.
Now, we want to look at getting rid of a cough using natural means, that’s what my website is all about. Here are some ways that you can try out:
Candies: If you have a “wet” cough, try Horehound Candy or lemon drops. As this candy tastes a little bittersweet, this candy works like an expectorant which can help loosen the phlegm. However, if you have a “dry” cough, try some slippery elm lozenges or any hard candy because it will help increase the saliva, which will in turn relief the cough.
Drinks: Mix some lemon juice with a little honey and cayenne pepper. It is very useful for all types of cough as it will soothe your throat, plus it helps the process of healing.
If you want to soothe your throat, you can also try mixing some cloves with honey drink. Cloves will help reduce the pain of sore throat and honey soothes your whole throat in general.
Tea: Try Thyme tea. Thyme is excellent in relaxing the respiratory tract. Mix some Thyme in a cup of hot water and add a little honey to taste. You can also try marshmallow tea. Mix some dried marshmallow in water and it can help relief a “wet” cough.
Finally, don’t forget ginger tea. It is also a very effective way to stop a cough. I would recommend adding honey to a ginger tea to taste, plus honey helps to soothe the throat.
Chest Rub: Get a chest rub, like a Mentholatum Ointment. Apply it on your throat and chest to relief yourself from the coughing pains.
Humidifier: If you cough a lot at night, use a humidifier to “wet” the air. It can reduce your night cough a lot.
As a caution, if your cough persists for more than 2 weeks, you must seek a doctor’s attention. Most of the natural remedies that I have talked about will help stop the cough in less than one week. As mentioned in the beginning of this post, if you experience pain in the chest and/or have a high fever, seek medical attention.
